Solar Guide

Six things to work through before you commit to a rooftop system — in the order they actually matter.

  1. 01

    Read your electricity bill first

Your average monthly bill, sanctioned load and tariff category determine almost everything about the system you need. Pull twelve months of bills before you speak to any installer.

  2. 02

    Measure the roof honestly

Count only shade-free area, minus setbacks, water tanks, stairwells and service access. Around 80 sq ft per kW is the working figure.

  3. 03

    Understand what you are buying

A quote that says '3 kW system' without naming modules, inverter, structure specification and protection equipment is not a quote you can compare against another.

  4. 04

    Check subsidy eligibility early

Central assistance applies to residential connections in your own name, installed by a registered vendor using ALMM-listed modules. Commercial sites claim depreciation instead.

  5. 05

    Plan for the paperwork

DISCOM feasibility, load sanction and net-meter installation take longer than the installation itself. Ask who files them — it should not be you.

  6. 06

    Ask about year eight

Panels rarely fail early; service relationships do. Ask what maintenance is included, who handles warranty claims, and whether anyone monitors output remotely.

FAQs

Short answers to the questions that come up most often.

Roughly 80 sq ft of shade-free roof per kW. A 3 kW system needs about 240 sq ft, a 5 kW system about 400 sq ft. Elevated structures let you keep using the terrace underneath, so the panels do not have to cost you the space.
